Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that David de Gea will sit out Saturday’s Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur.
The goalkeeper continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid, despite Rafa Benitez’s attempts to play down the speculation, and the Dutchman hinted his No 1 was not in the right state of mind for the 2015-16 curtain-raiser.
“I think about the human being more than the player and I don’t think he can handle that,” he was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
De Gea, who also came under scrutiny for his performance during United’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last week, is expected to be replaced by new boy Sergio Romero.
