‘An honour to take the ball from Madrid’

Pep Guardiola was impressed with the way his Bayern Munich side performed in the Audi Cup final win over Real Madrid.

Robert Lewandowski decided the friendly tournament in the hosts’ favour with a late goal and Guardiola commended his team after.

“We should do this every year, organise this match every year,” he began, Marca reports.

“It’s good for our evolution. I’ve congratulated my team and I’ll congratulate them after we play Wolfsburg.

“Taking the ball away from Madrid is always an honour, with the quality of [Marco] Asensio and Jese and the level of quality of these players. The effort was great.

“It’s only a friendly but to win against Madrid gives us great pleasure. They’re a super team and have a wonderful defensive organisation. The challenge is to get it with [Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo]. Rafa [Benitez] will do it.

“I enjoyed being Toni Kroos’ Coach. We always worked well together and he always wants to play, whether he was fit or not.

“With more experience he’ll just get better. He’s happy there, his family are in Madrid too and I wish him all the best for his career.”
