Monchi: Thank you Sevilla

Monchi has offered his gratitude to Sevilla for the faith they have shown in him by extending his contract for another five years.

The sporting director on Wednesday agreed a new deal that will run until June 2020, adding another three years onto his previous terms.

“I thank the club for their trust in me. My friends told me to leave when we won six straight trophies, they believed Sevilla had peaked. I ignored them,” he said at a Press conference, AS reports.

“Then came [winning the Europa League in Turin] after the difficult years. We went to Warsaw and won a trophy.

“I realised I’m not a sporting director. My title is sporting director of Sevilla and I can only be at this club. And there’s a clause that says maybe I’m fond of this club.

“I decided to stay and everything was very easy. For that I’m eternally grateful. There was understanding and that made it easy to find what I wanted.

“What we’ve achieved in recent years isn’t the work of Monchi but the result of the work of many people. Everyone at the club is fundamental.

“I want to send a message to the fans, who have always supported me. I might be the happiest man in the world.”

Sevilla President Jose Castro was present at the Press conference and compared Monchi to the very best players in the world.

“For us he is the Lionel Messi of sporting directors. All our successes bear his stamp. To sell to grow you have to have a good sporting director and Monchi is a pioneer,” Castro commented.

“We thank you for your efforts and your work.”
