Bartomeu remains Barca President

Josep Maria Bartomeu will stay on as Barcelona President for the next six years after winning Saturday’s election.

The 52-year-old won with 54.63 percent of the final vote and finished more than 20% clear of nearest challenger Joan Laporta.

Coming in third place was Agusti Benedito, who claimed 7.16%, while Toni Freixa positioned last with 3.7%.

Bartomeu was considered the pre-election favourite, despite coming in for scrutiny for his insistence on keeping Barca’s sponsorship with Qatar Airways and his involvement in the controversial Neymar transfer, which saw him, former President Sandro Rosell and the club face charges of tax fraud.

Nonetheless, his work in steadying the ship since replacing Rosell in January 2014 and appointing Luis Enrique as Coach, La Blaugrana’s second treble in 2014-15 and positive financial results during his reign have swayed the tide in the entrepreneur’s favour.

Barca have also confirmed that 47,270 socios cast their vote at Camp Nou – a turnout of just under 45%.

Final results:

Bartomeu – 54.63% (25,823 votes)

Laporta – 33.03% (15,615 votes)

Benedito – 7.16% (3,386 votes)

Freixa – 3.70% (1,750 votes)
