Gabi: Atleti adapt every year

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has praised his club’s ability to reinvent itself season after season, despite frequently selling its best players.

The Rojiblancos have lost high-profile players Mario Mandzukic, Joao Miranda and Arda Turan this summer.

However, it is a scenario that is nothing new at Vicente Calderon and, speaking at a publicity event, the 31-year-old saw no reason why his side cannot continue to compete at the top level.

“The club and the squad have always had the ability and the strength to reinvent themselves season after season,” Gabi said.

“It’s true that important players are leaving, but those who are coming in are doing very well and we hope that this year we can compete like we have done in recent seasons.”

Gabi also revealed that he has spoken to Turan following his recent departure to Barcelona.

“I’ve had the chance to speak to him. I thank him publicly for what he has done for the club over these four years.

“It was a personal decision. His intention was to play for Barcelona and when a player wants to leave the best thing for everyone is that he leaves. And I wish him the best, for sure.”

Finally, Gabi commented on Atleti’s new signing, Argentine Luciano Vietto.

“Of course it will take time for him to adapt to the way we work, but he has shown the great player that he is and I am sure he will offer us a lot.”
