Man Utd ‘asked about Varane’

Manchester United used the occasion of talks with Real Madrid over David De Gea to ask about the availability of Raphael Varane, it’s claimed.

Marca reports United’s enquiry regarding the France international was met with a swift rebuttal, as Varane is considered a cornerstone of the new project led by Rafa Benitez.

Varane isn’t looking to leave Santiago Bernabeu either but does want a more important role in the team – one he is likely to get under the new Coach.

If Varane isn’t satisfied, however, then he could look to leave Spain, and United would be one of the clubs with the financial power to prise him away from his current employers, as they did with Angel Di Maria.

United wouldn’t be Varane’s only suitors, however as Chelsea, led by Varane’s former boss in Madrid, Jose Mourinho, and Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich, would also be keen.

Varane is said to be in a similar situation to that of Gareth Bale, where Madrid are aware of interest in their services, but resolved to keep them both.
