Barca eased up says Mascherano

Javier Mascherano feels Barcelona took their foot off the gas in the 3-2 Champions League semi-final second leg defeat to Bayern Munich.

Despite seeing his team go through to the final in Berlin on June 6 after winning the tie 5-3 on aggregate, midfielder Mascherano was disappointed the Barca players relaxed after Neymar had given them a 2-1 first-half advantage.

“In the opening 45 minutes we played at the required level and deservedly went ahead,” the Argentine told reporters post-match.

“However, we unconsciously relaxed because of the difference in the [aggregate] scoreline, although I’m sure we won’t do that again. We can’t afford to relax because all our next games are going to be finals.

“Whoever we play in Berlin, whether it’s Real Madrid or Juventus, we’ll be up against a great side. Both have their own characteristics.

“If I were to choose between two of Europe’s most historic teams it would be an act of arrogance.

“We have two other competitions just around the corner so everything depends on us, but we are very proud to be going to the Champions League final with this team,” he asserted.
