Liverpool track La Real defender

Liverpool are monitoring the progress of Real Sociedad central defender Inigo Martinez and could be set to make a bid for the player this summer.

The 23-year-old is a product of La Real’s youth academy and has represented Spain once at senior level, coming on as a second-half substitute for Sergio Ramos in a 2-0 friendly win over Ecuador in August 2013.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with Martinez in recent seasons and he is seen as one of Spain’s best young defenders.

However, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is hoping to steal a march on his Spanish rivals and, according to El Confidencial, had the player watched during the Basques’ 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at the weekend.

Even so, La Real boss David Moyes will be keen to keep one of his key players at Anoeta as he bids to construct a team that is able to challenge for European football next season, although sources believe the club may be willing to do business if they receive an offer of around €30m
