Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso insists Barcelona will be favourites when the two sides meet in next week’s Champions League semi-final.
However, the former Real Madrid man maintains it is not an excuse and Luis Enrique’s men will have to be at their best to beat the Bundesliga champions.
“It could be said that Barca are favourites but they are going to have to prove it out on the pitch,” Alonso told a Press conference.
“Having said that, we can’t make any excuses and have to believe that we can go through to the final.
“Barcelona’s front three are very good but it’s not just them. You also have to recognise the stability that the players behind them give, so it’s important to take everything into account.”
Alonso also spoke about returning to play in Spain at the Camp Nou and the possibility of coming up against Madrid in the final in Berlin.
“Games against Barca are always very tense and difficult affairs. When I was at the Santiago Bernabeu they always had a special emotional implication.
“Next week at the Camp Nou will be slightly different but it will be equally sporting and competitive. I’ll feel the same way about playing there as I did when I played for Madrid.
“A final against Real Madrid would be good and there is every chance it could happen”
