Sir Alex: ’Messi the best? Hmm…’

Sir Alex Ferguson has weighed into the debate over who is the world’s best footballer and questioned whether Lionel Messi could play at a lesser club.

The former Manchester United manager, who had Cristiano Ronaldo under his wing when he was in charge at Old Trafford, feels the Portuguese is a more adaptable player than Messi.

“People ask who the best player in the world is. Plenty say it’s Messi and you can’t dispute that opinion,” said the Scot in an interview with the BBC.

“But Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers or anyone, and score a hat-trick in any game. I’m not sure Messi could do that.

“Ronaldo has two feet, is quick, and is also good in the air. He’s brave and, of course, Messi is brave too, but I just think Messi is a Barcelona player.”
