Jan Oblak rejected the hero tag after playing a key role in Atletico Madrid’s penalty shootout win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Atletico progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 1-0 win on the night, the tie finishing 1-1 on aggregate and needing penalties to separate the teams.
Oblak was a first half substitute after Miguel Angel Moya suffered a hamstring injury but, when asked about his contribution after the match, said it was a team effort – and not just from the players.
“I’m not the hero. Everyone here in this stadium is,” the goalkeeper protested, AS reports.
“It was bad luck for Moya. I hope he recovers as quickly as possible but it is hard not to play here. Football is like that, everything changes in a second.”
