‘Camacho indispensable to Malaga’

Javi Gracia has made it clear that he wants Malaga to retain Ignacio Camacho, describing the midfielder as ‘indispensable’ to his plans.

Reports in January suggested the 24-year-old could follow Vitorino Antunes and Roque Santa Cruz out of La Rosaleda in the summer, but the Coach is desperate to hang onto the Atletico Madrid youth product.

“I’d have preferred [Vitorino] Antunes and Roque [Santa Cruz] to stay, but that’s life and if opportunities arise, I understand the club must assess them,” he began to AS.

“I can give opinions on what’s good for the team, but the club must make an overall assessment. I understand the decisions which the club have taken.

“Departures give other players the opportunity to demonstrate their qualities.

“[Ignacio] Camacho was progressing very well before I got here. I think this year he’s become even better, and for me he’s an indispensable player.

“He’s very important to our project. Sometimes there’s the impression that I say one thing and the club does another, but we’re all in the same boat.

“So when you say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to someone leaving [the club], it’s knowing that the team can be weakened [as a result] and trying to find a way to reinforce the team.

“We're all on the same wavelength. Decisions are always made for the good of the club.”
