Pique hit with €2.5m tax bill

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is the latest footballer to fall foul of the Spanish tax authorities and has been hit with a €2.5m bill.

A report in La Vanguardia claims Pique has been ordered to shell out unpaid tax for the years 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, whilst he has also been given a €9,000 fine.

However, the Spain international disagrees with the calculations and is set to take the matter to court. In the meantime, no money will be collected.

The tax authorities have inspected several players over the past few months, with Lionel Messi the most high profile of them.

The Argentine had to stump up €53m in 2014 and is still under investigation.
