‘Villarreal may sign a winger’

Marcelino has confessed that Villarreal are looking to sign a winger before the end of the January transfer window.

The Coach previously refused to comment on the Yellow Submarine’s plans in the winter market, but he has now revealed that the club are keen to reinforce their wide positions.

“A winger may arrive. We don’t want to rush, we want to be sure that whoever comes in will reinforce us,” he mused at a Press conference.

“However, the winter market’s never easy. Cani [joining Atletico Madrid] was a sporting decision because he wanted to play a few more minutes.”

Looking ahead to this evening’s match against Athletic Bilbao, the former Sevilla boss praised Villarreal for making significant headway on all fronts in 2014-15 and revelled in the return of Argentine centre-back Mateo Musacchio.

“I feel our progress this season has been earned,” Marcelino added.

“We’re in the quarter-finals of the Copa, sixth in La Liga, four points off a Champions League spot and progressed the Europa League group stage.

“Athletic are a great team. They have a great squad, in my opinion the sixth best in the League. We’ll have to approach the game with the utmost respect.

“Moreover they were able to draw at Valencia and win at Sevilla. They’re still quite inconsistent but this doesn’t mean they can’t beat us or any other team.

“[Mateo] Musacchio can start any match from this point onwards. For us, he’s a very important player. The fact he’s available gives us greater assurance [in defence].

“I’ve more or less decided my line-up, unless any [last-minute] issues arise. I can’t say who’ll play as the players themselves don’t know yet.”
