Better late than never for Guerra

Cardiff City outcast Javi Guerra believes his loan move to Malaga was long overdue after being unveiled by his hometown club on Friday.

The 32-year-old striker was born in the Velez municipality of the Andalucian province but had not represented Los Boquerones until now.

“I’m very happy to return to Malaga and enjoy playing football again. I may have arrived late, but I’m very excited,” he said to assembled journalists.

“I’m really excited because it seemed that this moment would never come, but I think football has been fair with me.

“I’ve been here for two days, yet it’s felt like a month. I was surprised by the atmosphere in the dressing room. It’s been so easy to integrate into the group. Everything is good here.

“Cardiff was quite a difficult spell for me. Firstly, I had to adapt to the English way of thinking and understanding football and found it quite difficult.

“It’s true that last year was my best, I had a lot of confidence and scored a lot of goals, but it’s also true that football can change overnight. I’m now at Malaga to prove my worth, and I have opportunities to do so.

“I know the No 9 has the responsibility of scoring goals and players who have worn this jersey [before me] have been idols here.

“I know the fans will be watching me closely and require goals from me, but I’m proud to wear this number and hope to help the team achieve their objectives.

“I want to help the team as quickly as possible, although it’s a technical decision. I’m aware that the squad are in good shape and the players are working well, so I know it will be difficult to break through, but I still want to help.”

Guerra joined Cardiff from Real Valladolid on a free transfer in the summer but made just five goalless appearances for the Bluebirds, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.
