Mascherano ‘would love’ River return

Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano has revealed that he ‘would love’ to end his career at River Plate.

The 30-year-old is a youth product of Los Millonarios and played two senior campaigns for the club between 2003 and 2005 before eventually venturing into European football with West Ham in controversial fashion a year later.

“I would love to retire at River as it would represent going full circle,” he told Fox Sports.

“Barcelona have left a legacy [in football] and showed the world that you can win a lot by playing well.

“I’m eternally grateful to [Alejandro] Sabella. He was the Coach I felt most attached to. Sabella and Martino have things in common, but they’re also different in other ways.”

Mascherano, who was part of the Argentina team which finished runners-up at the World Cup in Brazil, signed a new four-year contract with Barcelona in August.
