Valverde laments boring encounter

Ernesto Valverde was honest in his assessment of Athletic Bilbao’s laboured 1-0 Copa del Rey win over Alcoyano after the game.

The Basques survived a scare against the minnows following a 1-1 draw in the opening leg, the teams only separated by Borja Viguera’s 38th-minute goal for the La Liga outfit, and Valverde pulled no punches at his post-match Press conference.

“It was a boring game to put it kindly and I don’t blame the fans for wanting to go home,” he said.

“We were lightweight in attack and in the second half we got that feeling of uncertainty, should we or shouldn’t we, but the best thing was to get through to the next round against Celta Vigo.

“They have been going through a rough patch in the League but are strong in attack, so it’s an open tie.

“They are above us in the table and it will be hard for everyone,” he added.
