Manchester United are understood to be on the trail of Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, according to the Daily Express.
Reds’ boss Louis van Gaal has placed Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels at the top of his January shopping list, yet could turn to Argentine international Otamendi if that deal falls through.
L’Equipe reported on Thursday that Los Che are pursuing the signing of Marseille’s Brazilian centre-back Doria, which could pave the way for 26-year-old Otamendi to make the move to Old Trafford.
Valencia will reportedly hold out for around €45m for the player, a figure which could prove prohibitive, while Van Gaal is also keeping tabs on other players as he looks to strengthen his squad.
The Dutchman would also like to bring Roma’s Kevin Strootman and Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar to the club in a bid to cement a Champions League spot this season.
