Portugal boss Fernando Santos claims Cristiano Ronaldo said he was tired after being replaced at half-time in the 1-0 defeat of Argentina.
The Real Madrid star played the opening 45 minutes of the friendly international at Old Trafford before Ricardo Quaresma took his place for the second half.
“Cristiano has played a lot of matches and we replaced him because he told me he was too tired and had a game for Real Madrid on Saturday [against Eibar at Ipurua],” he told a post-match Press conference.
“There were other tired players but I wasn’t able to change everyone. In the end I opted to replace those that had taken part in the Champions League.”
