Vicente del Bosque has responded to Sergio Ramos’ criticism of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa by backing the Chelsea pair.
Ramos appeared to suggest Cesc and Costa lacked commitment to the Spain cause after pulling out of the squad to play Belarus in a Euro 2016 qualifier and Germany in a glamour friendly.
Costa wasn’t named in the original squad in order to let the striker rest after a period of niggling injuries, while Cesc withdrew despite having played 90 minutes for Chelsea against Liverpool, the national team doctors giving the midfielder the go-ahead to leave the camp.
Del Bosque told a radio interview that Ramos is entitled to his opinion but he is sure the problems reported by Costa and Cesc are genuine.
“All the world can have their opinions but we have to make decisions,” the Coach said, Marca reports.
“We are in an era of trust in some players who have given us so much. I have no reason to distrust them.
“If players don’t come here because they’re unfit, they’re unfit. I have no reason not to trust either of them. There’s no desire to harm anyone.
“Our authority is demonstrated in other things, not only leaving out or calling up the players.
“I have the utmost confidence in the players. I’m not fooling myself by saying a player is unfit when they’re not.”
Del Bosque also revealed a little about Spain’s approach to the game against Belarus, confirming that even without Costa, the team would play with two forwards.
“I’m sure we’ll have two forwards but without abandoning the wings,” he noted.
“It’s clear that Belarus will play defensively.”
