Vela threatened with FIFA ban

Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela has been threatened with a FIFA sanction if he refuses to play for his country.

The Mexican has been called up by national team boss Miguel Herrera for the friendlies with Holland and Belarus on November 11 and 18, despite having repeatedly expressed his unwillingness to show up for international games.

According to TodoMercado, the 25-year-old risks a playing ban if he ignores the call-up.

It is not the first occasion this has happened and UEFA President Michel Platini has already gone on record as saying that any player refusing to attend national team games after being selected could be sanctioned by the international organisations – in this case FIFA.

It is a situation that reared its head in September when Franck Ribery declared his reluctance to play for France.

“Franck Ribery cannot decide if he plays for France or not,” said Platini at the time in comments reported by Marca.

“If the Coach summons you then you must attend. It is in the FIFA statutes. If he doesn’t go then he could be banned for three or four games with Bayern Munich.”
