Manchester United are planning a sensational €25m raid for Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique, according to the Daily Star.
Reds’ boss Louis van Gaal is desperate to strengthen what he perceives as the weak link in his team, namely central defence, and has put the 27-year-old at the top of his wish list.
United are confident of bringing the Barca man back to Old Trafford, where he spent four years between 2004 and 2008 and played 12 times for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, having been loaned out to Real Zaragoza for a season during that time.
Van Gaal is understood to have been informed by vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he will have further money to strengthen his squad in January, despite spending around €175m last summer.
