Ancelotti on Gerrard & Sterling

Real Madrid Coach Carlo Ancelotti has praised Raheem Sterling and revealed he once tried to sign Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

AS reports an interview Ancelotti gave to the British Press in which he looked ahead to Los Blancos’ visit to Anfield this week.

Sterling has been mooted as a potential Madrid target and Ancelotti agrees the winger has the talent to play for Madrid one day.

“He’s a player of great quality, without doubt among the best in Europe,” the Italian said.

“But we have a lot of quality at Madrid. Thinking of another forward is difficult. Clearly, Sterling isn’t in our plans.”

On the subject of Gerrard, Ancelotti admitted he would have loved to work with the captain and laments an approach made when he was with Milan didn’t work out.

“Gerrard is one of the players I would have loved to coach,” he confirmed.

“I’ve often thought about him. When I was at Milan we looked into it, but it was impossible as he was very attached to Liverpool.”
