Laporte ‘sticking with France’

Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte has moved to clear up some confusion surrounding his international allegiance.

A report in L’Equipe claimed the France Under-21 centre-back [pictured, left] planned to play for Spain if the French decided not to select him in the future.

However, Laporte dismissed the story via his official Twitter account.

“I play for France and I’m going to carry on playing for France,” he tweeted.

Born in Agen, Aquitaine, the 20-year-old joined Athletic’s youth system in 2010 and has represented his country at Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level.

Having made his Los Leones debut in a Europa League game against Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shimona in November 2012, he became only the second French player to have played for the Basque outfit after Bixente Lizarazu.
