‘Messi and Neymar are normal people’

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen says he is surprised at just how normal Lionel Messi and Neymar are.

In an interview with Bild the 22-year-old, signed from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer, also revealed how he found it difficult to settle in after picking up an injury when he first arrived.

“Messi and Neymar are normal people. They also need to eat, drink and go to the bathroom like everyone else. They are very nice and are close to everyone,” commented the German.

“I’m not talking on a sporting level, where they are massive, but what matters to me is personality because an idiot is an idiot regardless of the trophies you’ve won. Fortunately in our dressing room there are only good guys.

“I now feel comfortable at Barca. I had a good pre-season but after that I got injured and it was a bad time, although there is never a good time to get injured.”

Ter-Stegen also spoke of his rivalry with Claudio Bravo for the No 1 jersey.

“We both want to make life difficult for [boss] Luis Enrique but my two appearances in the Champions League were great experiences.

“I’m a realist and I analyse my performances, but I’m getting better every day because I’m training with the best players in the world,” he explained.
