Allegri: We came to Madrid to win

Massimiliano Allegri maintained his Juventus team had gone out with one intention against Atletico Madrid – to win.

The Serie A outfit suffered their first defeat of the season in the Champions League game at the Vicente Calderon, Arda Turan’s second-half strike proving the difference between the two sides, and Allegri was left to rue his side’s errors.

“We turned in a good performance but didn’t get enough shots in on goal and conceded from the rare mistakes we made.

“It’s a shame because we came here to win but couldn’t quite manage it,” he told Juventus’ official website.

The former Milan boss admitted Diego Simeone’s men are difficult to play against and emphasised the strength of the Spanish champions.

“It’s not easy against them because they shut down the spaces and defend very well. In the second half we created some decent openings but couldn’t pick out the right pass in the final third, so we leave with nothing to show for our efforts.

“They are a powerful side who like to make a battle of it and commit many fouls over the 90 minutes.

“They were at home but didn’t dictate the flow of the game, but we needed to make sure we weren’t open to their counter-attacks and in the main my players did well, even if it meant a few less shots,” he explained.
