Carlos: Casillas one of the greats

Former Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos has stepped to the defence of Iker Casillas, describing him as one of football’s greatest ever goalkeepers.

Casillas was criticised for his form at the start of the season and jeered in his last appearance at Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlos has however told AS that Casillas’ contribution to Madrid shouldn’t be forgotten, even though he accepts the supporters’ right to voice their opinions.

“Iker is a club institution. He’s spent 15 years wearing that shirt, won many trophies and achieved many successes,” the Brazilian told AS.

“He’s an idol and one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of football.

“Fans might protest about some players. That’s normal. But Casillas still has a lot to offer Madrid.”

Carlos was also asked about his fellow Brazilian and successor at left-back, Marcelo.

“He’s playing well. He’s the perfect player for his position,” Carlos replied.

“I think he’s one of the best left-backs in the world right now.”
