United weigh up Valencia defender

Manchester United are weighing up a bid for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi in the January transfer window.

According to the Daily Express, the Argentine centre-back is the latest figure to come under the scrutiny of Reds’ boss Louis van Gaal as the Dutchman looks to shore up a back line that has had a disastrous start to the new Premier League campaign.

Otamendi only joined Los Che last February following a €12m move from Porto, but was immediately loaned to Brazilian outfit Atletico Mineiro for the rest of the season.

However, Otamendi returned to Mestalla in the summer and is now considered an integral part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, who have made an impressive start to the new season.

Van Gaal’s first choice is understood to be Borussia Dortmund’s German international Mats Hummels, yet with that deal looking increasingly unlikely he is ready to turn to Otamendi, a much more realistic target.

Nonetheless, a potential stumbling block to any agreement could be the release clause of €50m in the 26-year-old’s contract.
