Jose Mourinho has revealed his surprise that Chelsea were able to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.
The former Arsenal captain completed his transfer from Camp Nou to Stamford Bridge earlier in the summer but Mourinho didn’t expect the midfielder would be available.
“I always thought Cesc would want to stay at Barca,” Sport reports the former Real Madrid Coach as telling the English Press.
“He’s good, Catalan and the exit of Xavi Hernandez meant I thought he’d stay there. When we realised he wanted to return to London, we knew we wanted him.
“He’s a bit like me. I was at a great club but I wanted to return to England. He was at a great club but wanted to return.”
Mourinho also shared what aspects of Cesc’s game had most impressed him, describing the Spain international as Chelsea’s ‘missing link.’
“He can play in any position. He can play as a No.8 or a No.10 and has experience in the Premier League,” Mourinho noted.
“His best quality is the speed with which he analyses and executes. He rarely makes a wrong decision. He can speed up or reduce the intensity of the game. He’s very smart, the missing link.”
