‘Being Sevilla President is a dream’

Sevilla President Jose Castro has said holding the position at Los Rojiblancos is the stuff dreams are made of.

Castro has been interviewed by AS and reflected on his history as a Sevilla fan and promised to keep faith with the cantera.

“[Being President] means everything. It’s the most you can do for Sevilla and something you dream about many times but most of the time it’s impossible it can happen,” Castro said.

“It’s clear that love isn’t enough to be President of Sevilla. It’s carried in the blood.

“I owe my passion for Sevilla to my uncle. He instilled the love of these colours in me when I was a child. I sat behind the goal and always entered through gate 19.

“It’s logical [we favour the cantera]. Good players have always been produced but the focus is more on the role played by the home-grown.

“It’s true that the Sevilla fans, and the President is just another fan, always have a special feeling for the produce of the club.

“It’s also true that sometimes that love overflows and can ask too much.”

Castro added that his worst moment as a Sevilla fan had nothing to do with what happened on the pitch, with the death of Antonio Puerta taking precedence.

“The death of Antonio Puerta affected us a lot. We were in Athens to play AEK and returned without playing,” he recalled.

“We returned to attend the funeral. It was a hard, hard blow.”

Asked for his ultimate ambition for the club, Castro said it was hard to see past the unequal television deal.

“My real dream, unfeasible as the system doesn’t change the distribution of the television pie, is to win the League,” he revealed.

“I think we have good prospects for the season. We fight for goals that are beyond the economic reality of Sevilla.

“We are fully confident in the Coach and the coaching staff and our players because they are willing to fight to the end.

“And we have our loyal fans to give encouragement and push us to victory. I am very optimistic.”
