‘7-1 doesn’t sound real’

Germany forward Andre Schurrle is in disbelief over beating World Cup hosts Brazil 7-1 in last night’s semi-final.

Schurrle scored Germany’s sixth and seventh goals after entering the match on the hour mark and said after the final whistle that he can’t quite believe the score line.

“Everybody was screaming, all very positive. 7-1 is a fantastic result. It doesn’t sound real,” AS reports the Chelsea man as saying.

“After the fifth goal went in before half-time we were in disbelief on the bench. But we have to move on.”

Schurrle added that if Germany don’t now win the trophy the tournament will still end in disappointment, particularly since the country’s last success came in Euro ’96, some 18 years ago.

“Of course we have to win. If we want to be the best generation in Germany’s history we need to win the trophy,” he admitted.

“It was so long ago that the country doesn’t even celebrate anything about winning in 1996.

“We’re nearly there. We have to continue working and make the country proud.”

Schurrle also believes the options available to Coach Joachim Low mean that Low has plenty of weapons with which to take on either Argentina and the Netherlands.

“This group has a lot of depth, with 23 players who can make a difference,” he insisted.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to work together for our goal. We’re so close.”
