Bartomeu on Suarez and Xavi

Barcelona President Josep Bartomeu has echoed sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta’s praise of Luis Suarez’s apology for biting Giorgio Chiellini.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with the Catalan giants this summer, with it being reported in some quarters that his confession of his actions came at the request of the Blaugrana.

However, the Camp Nou chief refused to reveal whether the club would be attempting to sign the forward from Liverpool this summer.

“Luis Suarez is a Liverpool player but what I would say is that Suarez has recognised he has made a mistake,” Bartomeu said at a Press conference.

“That is a good decision in order to rehabilitate. He needs help, but I’m not saying more than that. He needs to continue playing.

“He isn’t a Barca player, he is a Liverpool player. But what Luis Suarez has done, saying sorry, helps football and helps competition. Admitting he was wrong is an important step.”

Bartomeu also discussed Barca legend Xavi, who is considering leaving the club, as well as the Blaugrana’s desire to look to the future.

“Regarding Xavi, I think Andoni [Zubizarreta] explained it well. He has been in the first team for many years and he has earned the right to decide. We will respect his decision.

“The day he goes, he will go down in history as the best player. If he wants to continue with us, we are delighted. If he wants to leave we will help him.

“Xavi will return here because he will be a great Coach.

“We need to look to the future. We are responsible together and we are excited to work towards what it in front of us.

“Since I have been President, we have been making decisions to ensure that we continue being competitive.

“We believe in Messi, Neymar, Iniesta, we believe in the best players in the world. I want to transform Barca.”
