Van Gaal: I used break

Holland Coach Louis Van Gaal says he used the scheduled drinks break against Mexico to make crucial tactical changes.

Two late goals by the Dutch enabled them to complete a stunning turnaround against the Central Americans, securing a World Cup quarter-final place.

“I used it [the break] to change to 4-3-3 and from then we created many more opportunities,” Van Gaal explained after the final whistle in Fortaleza.

“From then we were better and Ochoa made great saves. It’s an intelligent way to use them.

“The players showed they wanted to win until the end. The humidity did not work in our favour, but we were fighting until the end. This win will give us a lot of confidence.”
