Fred: Suarez ban too severe

Brazil striker Fred has come to the defence of his Uruguay counterpart Luis Suarez by insisting the Liverpool man’s biting ban is too harsh.

Suarez was banned for nine international games and a further four months from all football activity for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the Group D game between their countries.

AS reports Fred as agreeing Suarez deserves punishment but doesn’t feel Suarez’s career should be threatened, as he argues Suarez’s is by the sanction handed down.

“You can’t deny that he made a mistake but as a player, as a human being, I understand that on the pitch the player comes to the surface with tension in disputed areas,” Fred said.

“I see it as too severe. It could end his career.

“In my view, it’s not fair. But I think he has to be punished. I would have liked to see Suarez still playing at the World Cup.”
