Messi ‘excited’ for World Cup

Lionel Messi has spoken of how much he is looking forward to representing Argentina at the World Cup.

The Barcelona forward captained the South Americans to a 3-0 friendly win over Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, the goals coming from Rodrigo Palacio, Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez.

Mundo Deportivo reports Messi as saying after the final whistle that there is a feeling of anticipation among the Albiceleste squad.

“I’m very happy with the reception from the fans,” Messi said.

“I’m as excited [for the World Cup] as my teammates. We know each other very well and we know what kind of players we have.

“But we have to proceed with tranquillity. What’s important is what comes next. We’re all looking forward to being part of the World Cup.”

Messi added that the game against the Caribbean country was good preparation for the tournament, but dismissed the suggestion that Argentina took it easy out of concern for their fitness.

“In the second-half we were very regulated but you can’t go out there thinking about being careful or that nothing happens to you,” he continued.

“The risks are always there. The problem is now that it takes very little to get hurt and if something happens, you don’t have much time to recover.”
