Gerrard hopes for Suarez WC absence

Steven Gerrard has admitted he would welcome Luis Suarez missing Uruguay’s World Cup game against England.

The Three Lions captain added that his Liverpool teammate would understand, according to AS.

“I think from a selfish perspective, his absence would benefit England against Uruguay,” Gerrard said.

Suarez has undergone knee surgery in recent weeks and faces a race against time to be back for the start of the tournament.

England and Uruguay are joined by Italy and Costa Rica in Group D, with England and Italy meeting in the first round of games before Gerrard and Suarez go against each other on June 19.

“But I know Luis as a friend and teammate at Liverpool and I know it would kill him to miss the World Cup,” Gerrard added.

“He’s a fighter who will do everything to be fit. But if he’s not, it’s something that could only help [England]. He’ll understand.”
