Alcantara out of World Cup

Bayern Munich have confirmed reports in the Spanish and German Press that Thiago Alcantara is out of this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The player picked up a knee injury in April but was expected to recover in time to make Vicente Del Bosque’s 23-man squad for the tournament.

He was named in La Roja’s provisional 30-man party earlier this week but he has now suffered a recurrence of the injury to his right knee he suffered last month. It is said his recovery will take around 11 weeks.

As a result, the 23-year-old midfielder will sit out his team’s World Cup defence, having also previously missed out on appearing at Euro 2012 and the London 2012 Olympics through injury.

It remains to be seen whether Del Bosque will name a replacement.
