‘They had the ball, we had chances’

Karim Benzema feels Bayern Munich’s domination of the ball was for naught as Real Madrid created better chances in the Champions League semi-final.

Benzema scored the only goal of a game that saw Bayern control the play but Madrid threaten throughout on the counter-attack.

Marca reports Benzema as saying that it was the opportunities to score that mattered most.

“We had better chances even though they had almost all the possession,” the striker said.

“They are a great team but we made the goal. We were at a very high level and the result is good for us.

“I’m happy because we won this match and because I scored. Strikers always want to score but the important thing is the 1-0.

“It was very important for us to score but more important is the victory, but we know the 1-0 isn’t sufficient to go through.

“But it is very important to win at home. We have to score there. That will be very important too.”

Benzema admitted that he was suffering from a minor injury but stressed he would be fine, and praised the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who recovered from a muscle problem and the flu to play a part in the fixture.

“It hurts a little bit. I’ll have to rest for Saturday,” Benzema revealed.

“[Cristiano] looks alright, no pain or anything and hopefully he’ll be even better for Saturday. Bale too, he’s done well.”
