Martino content despite draw

Barcelona Coach Tata Martino was pleased with his side’s performance in the Champions League quarter-final with Atletico Madrid.

Martino spoke to reporters after the 1-1 draw and said a repeat showing next week at Vicente Calderon will see La Blaugrana through to the next stage.

“I’m proud of the way Barca have played. Sometimes we did better, other times we didn’t,” Martino said.

“If we follow this path then we have a chance of success.

“We deserved another goal or two but the performance gives me reasons to be calm.

“We had intensity for the whole 90 minutes. I think we had more chances and deserved to win.”

Martino praised his side’s performance after Atletico went in front and believes the tie is still in the balance.

“We saw the best of the team after we conceded,” Martino added.

“There was more movement and depth in the second-half. We got forward well and shot on goal.

“We worked together and played with a lot of intensity.

“The aim of every game is to win so we’ll try to do the same for the away leg.

“You can see how one team tries to play. We’ll try to do the same.

“The tie is still very even and I don’t know if being the home side for the second-leg counts for much.

“A 1-1 draw is better for them and we’re a bit down about that but I’m still happy with the performance.

“If we carry on like that then we’ll go through.”

Martino was asked about Neymar, the goal scorer, and Gerard Pique, who had to be substituted through injury.

“It’s important for any player when they score and will be a very important morale boost [for Neymar],” Martino replied.

“The goal rounded off a very good game from him and it came at a good time for us.

“Pique has bruising but I can’t explain any more than that.

“We’re very happy with our squad and we know we can rely on anyone.

“Unfortunate things like this happen but Marc Bartra [who replaced Pique] did very well when he came on.

“Bartra is a defender with a lot of quality. I was surprised how quickly he settled into the game as he hadn’t even warmed up. He has a lot of character.”
