‘League doesn’t count in Europa derby’

Sevilla President Jose Castro has warned against using Real Betis' League position as a measuring stick when the sides meet in the Europa League.

Betis are currently bottom of the table but Castro has insisted that Los Verdiblancos will present a difficult proposition on Thursday.

“Derbies are derbies, so while it’s true that Sevilla are better placed in the League, in a match that doesn’t count,” Castro is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.

“Derbies are different games that exist in their own way,” Castro continued.

“It’s difficult to detach from comments in the street even for professionals and the players are keen to continue in the competition that has given so much prestige to Sevilla.

“Football changes every minute,” Castro added when asked about his side’s upturn in fortunes in recent weeks.

“Five days ago the goal of returning to Europe was complicated but now the picture is better.”
