Former Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho has said Raphael Varane is the best young defender in the world.
Mourinho was in the dugout at Santiago Bernabeu when Varane moved to Madrid from Lens and the current Chelsea manager remains an admirer of the France international.
“I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he's the best,” Mourinho told the British Press regarding the 20-year-old.
“A young player must be somebody who plays in the World Cup for the first time. These are players like Hazard, Neymar and Rafa Varane. Maybe I forget some others,” Mourinho added.
It was speculated Mourinho wanted to take Varane with him to Stamford Bridge but the January signing of Kurt Zouma from St. Etienne is thought to have ended Chelsea’s interest.
