Benzema focused on Atletico

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has said that while he is happy with the win over Schalke attention must now turn to Atletico Madrid.

Los Blancos meet Los Colchoneros at Vicente Calderon on Sunday and go into the game with a three point lead at the top of the table over both Atleti and Barcelona.

Madrid prepared for the game with an emphatic 6-1 win over Schalke in the Champions League and Benzema, who scored twice, as did Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, was understandably pleased with the outcome.

“It was a great game and a great night,” he told reporters after the final whistle.

“The game was important because it was away from home and we had to win.

“We’ve played to a high level and we are very happy.

“For me it was a good game because for the confidence of a striker it is important to score.

“I feel like I played very well and want to continue that way.”

On the subject of the Madrid derby, Benzema insisted it was no more important than any other game in the final part of the season.

“Now every game is a final for us,” he argued.

“The derby is an important League match since we’re top but nothing will be finished. We’re going to rest well to prepare for this game.”

Benzema was also asked if he preferred playing in attack with Bale or Jese and offered a diplomatic reply.

“They are two different players and no matter what, the important thing is the team.”
