Carlo Ancelotti has stressed the importance of the Copa del Rey after Real Madrid reached the final with a 5-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Los Blancos had a 3-0 lead from the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu but wrapped up the tie with a 2-0 win at Vicente Calderon, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice in 14 minutes, both penalties, before he was struck by an object thrown from the crowd as he left the pitch at half-time.

Ancelotti said at his post-match Press conference that in his opinion the game was as good as won in the first match and as good as over once Madrid took the lead.

“The advantage of the tie was crucial and today we scored very soon which set us up to win,” Ancelotti told reporters.

“The team played very well and deserve to be in the final.

“Atletico found the tie very difficult after the first leg.”

Ancelotti added that the Cup, while not of the importance of the League or the Champions League, was high on the club’s agenda this season.

“Qualifying for the final was one of the goals of the season,” the Italian revealed.

“Not conceding a goal in the competition shows how important it is to the team.

“The Cup is important because all the teams have fought hard to reach the final. We play all the competitions.

“It’s true that this was the lowest on our minds. We want the Champions League and the League but reaching a final is always a good thing.”
