Marcelino: Villarreal too soft

Marcelino has criticised Villarreal’s attitude in their 4-2 defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday.

A Karim Benzema brace and goals from Gareth Bale and Jese gave Madrid the three points, with Mario and Gio dos Santos on target for the Yellow Submarine.

But Marcelino wasn’t happy with a well-intentioned defeat, letting rip at his post-match Press conference.

“No, I’m not satisfied with the performance on my team,” he told reporters.

“If I was I wouldn’t deserve to be Coach of Villarreal.

“The first goal is a mistake that can happen but it shouldn’t happen here.

“The problem is we were too soft with little defensive intensity throughout the team.

“We didn’t make it difficult enough for Real Madrid’s attack.

“It was maybe our worst game defensively.”

Marcelino also declined to blame the side’s injury list for the performance.

“Casualties are part of the competition and no cause for losing or not being competitive,” he insisted.

“We’re running out of games and we have not been sufficiently intense or dynamic.

“Beside their quality, Real Madrid exploit every little mistake you make and we needed to be more forceful. They got their goals too easily.”
