Gabi: We must work harder

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has called on his teammates to knuckle down in the aftermath of Saturday’s loss to Almeria.

The title challengers were beaten 2-0 by their struggling hosts and had goalkeeper Dani Aranzubia sent off, with Jose Antonio Verza scoring the resulting penalty, his second goal of the game.

Gabi took the gloves from Aranzubia as Atleti had used their three substitutes and told reporters after the game what it was like to go in goal.

“I tried to guess which way the penalty would go but it was difficult,” Gabi said.

“We prepare in the right way to win games but today we dominated and weren’t successful.

“They were with some dubious decisions.

“We had two unfortunate moments but we have to keep working harder.”

Atleti’s next game is the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg at home to Real Madrid, with Atletico trailing 3-0 from the first encounter.

“We need to win this game,” Gabi insisted.

“It is a very, very complicated semi-final but we will try.”
