Diego: Atleti one of Europe’s best

Diego believes that in returning to Atletico Madrid, he has joined one of the strongest teams in Europe.

The Brazil midfielder returned to the Vicente Calderon on loan late in the transfer window and made his second debut as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Atleti went top of the League with the commanding victory and Diego feels that this is a much better team than he played with in 2011-12.

“It was about time this team grew and won,” he told a Press conference.

“When I first came here it was a very well organized team, which comes from the bench.

“Now we’re more accustomed to playing at this level, to winning.

“This is one of the strongest teams in Europe and I want to help the team keep winning.”

Diego, on loan from Wolfsburg, credited Diego Simeone as a major part of why he wanted to return to Los Colchoneros.

“My relationship with Simeone is spectacular,” he said.

“He’s the best Coach I’ve worked with in my life and has helped me a lot as a player and as a person.

“The trust he has in me certainly makes a difference in the decisions I make.

“It was great to start with a win [on Sunday].

“It was a very difficult and important game but I got a spectacular reception and was able to make a goal.

“I prepared a lot for this but I have to thank everyone: my teammates, the fans, the board and the trust of my Coach. I’m very happy.”

Atletico’s next outing sees a Copa del Rey Madrid derby, a game Diego is keen to win.

“It will be very difficult, as it always is when you play against Real Madrid.

“But we are ready to play a great game. Let’s go out to win the match. We will give everything.”
