Messi: We need Neymar

Lionel Messi is hopeful Neymar recovers in quick time from his sprained ankle as he feels Barcelona need the Brazil forward fit.

A three-week lay-off is the early diagnosis for Neymar, with reports suggesting he will be ready in time for Barca’s Champions League games against Manchester City.

“Hopefully Neymar’s injury is not serious,” Messi told TV3 following the Copa del Rey win over Getafe.

“And hopefully he will not be out too long because we need him.”

Messi scored both goals of the 2-0 win on the night, having scored twice in the first-leg’s 4-0 win.

Declaring himself happy with the result and the performance, Messi added: “I needed to get up to the pace of matches again.

“After the first-leg it was a good opportunity to play 90 minutes.

“We are happy with the game and took it seriously, as usual.”

Messi’s teammates, Marc Bartra and Cristian Tello, were in the Press mixed zone following the final whistle, with Bartra thanking Tata Martino for giving him a run in the side.

“Tata has given me confidence.

“My goal now is to be a better player and I will fight for it.

“I always give my best and I want to take my opportunities.”

Bartra also paid tribute to Xavi Hernandez, who made his 700th appearance for Barca when introduced as a second-half substitute.

“It will be difficult for anyone else to reach that level,” Bartra said.

“Xavi has 700 lessons to teach.”

Tello, meanwhile, was asked about his future in the winter transfer window after being strongly linked with a move away from the club.

“I want to stay at the club but we will see at the end of the season.

“I’m happy here.

“There is nothing to clarify. It makes sense – I’m playing less than last year or the one before. I go to work, look for more games and always give everything.”
