‘Both Iker and I want to play’

Diego Lopez has mused once more on keeping Iker Casillas out of a place in the Real Madrid team: “Iker wants to play as much as I do.”

The 32-year-old looks set to continue into 2014 as Madrid’s No 1 ahead of Casillas, in a situation that has drawn continued coverage.

Starting Madrid’s mid-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain yesterday, the goalkeeper was once more asked about keeping out Spain’s record caps holder.

“I will do what I can to play every match, but the Coach chooses who he wants to play,” Diego Lopez replied.

“Iker wants to play every match as much as I do, but we have to respect the Coach's decision.

“It was a nice and interesting match against a great team – it was a tough preparatory match and was very interesting.

“We've done very well these last few days since our break. We have a very demanding schedule and some tough matches at the Bernabeu. We also have the Cup ties.

“The Champions League is further away, but it will be difficult against Schalke. They are very important competitions and this year we have to win titles.”
