Zubi to reassure Messi

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta will fly out to Argentina next week, reportedly to reassure Lionel Messi of his status at the club.

The Argentine is currently working to recapture his match fitness as part of the second and final phase to recovering from a torn hamstring suffered in November.

Whilst in Buenos Aires, reports in Spain have continued to speculate over the possibility of Barca agreeing a new contract with the 26-year-old.

However, Vice-President Javier Faus commented this week that ‘there is no reason’ to improve his terms at the moment, whilst President Sandro Rosell also denied that any agreement over a new deal was in the pipeline.

AS say that these are statements to have the player concerned, with him otherwise believing that talks to improve his current deal, which runs until June 2018, were likely to come in 2014.

The Catalans have confirmed that they are sending sporting director Zubizarreta out to meet with Messi and reports are that this is in order to ‘reassure’ him over his position at the club.

Zubizarreta was initially not scheduled to travel out to see the player, but will now accompany Dr Ricard Pruna and Pepe Costa, medical staff who were due to assess Messi’s physical recovery from his injury.
