Herrera open to Athletic extension

Ander Herrera says that he will not discuss Manchester United any more and that he is open to signing a contract extension with Athletic Bilbao.

The midfielder was the subject of a late summer bid from the Red Devils, but deadline day confusion saw the potential deal break down.

Now, the 24-year-old has looked to once more assert that his commitment lies with his current team and that he has moved on from

“It is not something that I am going to talk about any more, it does not help,” Herrera has told AS this week on the Premier League side’s previous interest.

“I have explained what I have had to. I’m happy here, I have always said that, and will continue with Athletic.

“Do I then plan to sign an extension? Yes. Why would I not listen? The club has not yet taken that step.

“I am expectant and especially happy at Athletic. I have two-and-a-half years of my current contract ahead, there is time.”

Herrera mused on Athletic’s recent form, which has pushed them up to fourth in La Liga.

“We are happy and it is true that when you are in fourth, it makes you dream even more. We wanted to play a good game from start to finish and at the same level against Barcelona.

“In Vigo [in the Copa del Rey] we did not play bad, but the tie is now complicated. The Cup, however, remains the most winnable tournament.

“Our secret so far? The role and involvement of everyone will allow us to have a good season from beginning to end.

“I do not speak about the day to day, but in our play. Except for Xabier Etxeita, everyone has played.

“We have to keep a cool head, and not forget that last year we were only safe from relegation with three games to go.

“Comebacks say much. Also, the team is capable of playing against the likes of Barca without breaking. We only lacked force for 20 minutes of that game.”
